Economics professor at Columbia University, Jagdish Bhagwati is an expert at trade, WTO and multilateralism. He professes free trade in a multilateral context. He thinks that the current crop of US senators and Congressman are a deplorable disappointment to proponents of multilateralism. In the last few decades Bhagwati has propounded path-breaking theories relating to globalized trade. According to Jagdish, the breakdown of the Doha round of WTO talks has less to do with India and Brazil’s protectionism than with the US’s paralyzing inability to respond to long standing world-wide demand for the reduction of its agricultural subsidies.
